I want my God back.
Digby got me thinking. Whatever your particular faith is we have to admit that Christian liberals have ceded Christianity to the Right. The moral force of Christianity has animated major progressive movements throughout our history. Abolition and the Civil Rights movement are perfect examples of people of deep and real faith in the vanguard- the only legitimate place for a progressive to be.
I have believed for a long time that the Sermon on the Mount is the most progressive statement ever recorded - and a set of direct challenges. I also believe, with real faith, that it is a list of facts.
Very often Christianity and active political liberalism make perfect sense together. I, for one, refuse to give over Jesus to the Right any longer. I refuse to be silenced any longer by those who have created a fictitious Jesus to sooth and scare a fearful voting block. Jesus is a liberal.
